Police engage the Clergy in fighting crime

Mangochi Police have brought on board the faith community to work hand in hand in halting criminal activities in the district, believing there are some evil forces that drive those involved to indulge in such activities, including murder and suicide cases.
The meeting took place on April 18, 2024, at Mangochi Multipurpose Hall, where some members from the Muslim Association of Malawi and Pastors Fraternal (Mangochi chapters) attended.
According to statistics, the station has recorded 15 cases of murder in the first quarter of this year compared to 13 cases which were registered the same period last year.
Speaking during the meeting, the Officer In-Charge for Mangochi Police Station, Mr. Morgan Dzonzi, Assistant Commissioner of Police, highlighted that the Clergy has a significant role in preaching to their congregants to refrain from the malpractices which are against the teachings of the holy books.
Dzonzi emphasized that police alone cannot manage to end the vice and provide quality services; hence the call.
“We have noted the increase of murder cases where Kabadza operators are being targeted; we want the clergy to decisively preach against such vices if we are to win,” Dzonzi alluded.
He also pleaded with the religious leaders on the need to preach words of hope to their members to prevent them from taking their lives.
The Chairperson for the Muslim Association of Malawi, Mangochi Chapter, Sheikh Fahad Kansuli, committed to work with police in tightening security in the district.
Kansuli, however, called on the security agency to come up with various strategies that will help to end the malpractices.
Echoing the same sentiment, Pastor Deborah Phiri, Chairperson for Mangochi Pastors Fraternal, commended Mangochi Police for organizing the interface meeting, saying such gatherings are crucial in addressing security issues.
