A 35-year-old man identified as Thaulo Mayere has died after being hit by a fallen tree which he was cutting in Phirilongwe Forest Reserve on June 10, 2024, in Mangochi district.
It is reported that Mayere was a well-known charcoal burner and had two wives. On the afternoon of June 9, 2024, he left his first wife’s house and went alone into the forest to cut down trees for charcoal burning and did not return home.
As usual, his first wife thought that he had opted to spend the night at his second wife’s house. However, the second wife had a similar thought in mind until the following morning when he was discovered lying lifeless in a pool of blood, with a big cut on his head beside the fallen tree in the forest.
The matter was reported to the Village Headman, who later informed the Katema Police Unit.
The officers visited the scene and took the body to Katema Health Centre, where postmortem results indicated that Mayere succumbed to blood loss due to the head injuries.
He hailed from Chilumba village, Traditional Authority Mponda, in Mangochi.
