The Mangochi Senior Resident Magistrate’s Court convicted and ordered Nyozani Dikamdima, 27, to pay a fine of K600,000 for reckless driving, contrary to section 126(1)(4)(C) of the Road Traffic Act, on March 13, 2024.

During court proceedings, Prosecutor Inspector Shadreck Wisiki narrated that on May 21, 2023, around 1340hrs, Dikamdima was driving a Toyota Sienta Hatchback, registration number CZ6083, from Liwonde towards Mangochi Boma with three passengers on board. Upon reaching the graveyard near Mpima Trading Centre, Dikamdima lost control of the vehicle due to overspeeding, swerved into the offside lane, and hit two pedal cyclists traveling in the opposite direction before the vehicle overturned twice.

As a result of the collision, both pedal cyclists sustained multiple fractures on both legs and were initially treated at Mangochi District Hospital before being transferred to Zomba Central Hospital, where they recovered after several months.

During his appearance in court, Dikamdima pleaded guilty to both counts of reckless driving and asked for leniency, stating that he supports his family.

Prosecutor Wisiki reminded the court that Dikamdima’s actions could have resulted in loss of innocent lives and requested a stiffer punishment.

Senior Resident Magistrate Muhammad Chande concurred with the prosecution and sentenced Dikamdima to pay a fine of K300,000 for each count of reckless driving, totaling K600,000. Chande further instructed Dikamdima to pay K250,000 to each victim as compensation.

Dikamdima hails from Mgundaphiri village, Traditional Authority Mponda, in Mangochi.
