Police in Mangochi district have arrested Bamusi Neva, 30, and seven others on allegations that they destroyed Koche Roadblock Shelter and a motor vehicle’s rear windscreen and lens, all items worthy K745,000.

It is alleged that Madalitso George, 38, on December 23, 2023 was driving a Mark X saloon registration BUDY G1 from the direction of Makawa heading Mangochi Boma.

Upon arrival at Maldeco Trading Centre, due to overspeeding he hit a pedal cyclist who was crossing from the left to the right side of the road who sustained painful chest and minor bruises on the right elbow.

Due to hostility at the scene, the driver cruised away to the nearby Koche Roadblock. The suspects run after the car and found the driver reporting the matter to police.

The irate suspects started pelting stones on the motor vehicle, resultantly, the rear windscreen and both lens were smashed. Sensing danger the driver fled with the motor vehicle and proceeded to report the issue at Mangochi Police Station.

Eventually, the suspects thought that Police had deliberately allowed the driver to ran away. They vandalised the shelter and looted the barriers before running away.

Police initiated investigations immediately which led to the arrest of the suspects.

All suspects will appear before court soon to answer charges of malicious damage contrary to section 344(a) which attracts maximum penalty of 7-years imprisonment with hard labour.

Meanwhile, Police in the district are appealing to the public to refrain from taking the laws into their own hands and opt for dialogue to avoid committing crimes.
