In a bid to return power it is reported that President Lazarus Chakwera has settled for Atupele Muluzi as his running mate for the 2025 Malawi polls.

This is despite the agreement Chakwera made with his deputy Saulos Chilima to exchange power while supporting each other in everyone’s term in ten years; 2020 to 2030.

Sources in within the Malawi Congress Party (MCP), the main partner in President Lazarus Chakwera’s Tonse Alliance government told the Malawi bulletin on Saturday morning that Chakwera will not work again with UTM in 2025.

It is reported that some wanted Enoch Chihana to Partner with Dr Lazarus Chakwera but others opted for young Muluzi because of his youth ideas

“You know already that Chakwera wants to stand in 2025 and for that reason, Chilima is out of the equation as his running mate as his term of office is over. So, the party looked around who could bring youth and eastern region votes, and Atupele Muluzi’s name came out clearly.

“Initially, Enoch Chihana was preferred but due to corruption cases currently in court and marginal vote from the north, his name was removed then opted for Muluzi. MCP thinks that picking Atupele will attract youth votes,” said the source.

The source added, “To conform to this right, Chakwera ended Bakili Muluzi’s MK1.4 billion corruption case and then assigned to Cyclone Freddy response initiative. Chakwera did that to accelerate the partnership with UDF or the Mulizi family for his 2025 presidential bid.

“From now onwards, expect Muluzi family support towards Chakwera’s 2025 presidential bid. MCP has completely dealt with Chilima as he will be busy with corruption cases in court while them campaigning. It’s now up to Chilima to make his next political move either joining MCP or out of the Tonse Alliance government”.

There was no immediate reaction from both MCP and Atupele on this accession as we went to press.

But on Friday, November 10, 2023, supported Chakwera’s 44% Malawi Kwacha’s devaluation arguing that it is beyond current leadership ability.

“Our great Nation need not be in this unfortunate current situation. This has been created by multiple factors from the past now beyond the control of even the wisest of our leaders. We should not get into the blame game, nor fall into chaos & confusion.

“Instead, with a clear vision and firm resolution, we will focus on fundamental lasting changes, based on introducing and implementing a series of solid programs of effective domestic wealth generation,” posts Muluzi on his Facebook page wall.
