Professor John Chisi of Umodzi party on Friday, November 3, 2023, dumped his political grouping for the Malawi Congress Party (MCP).

it is now known that the former opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) vice president for the central region, Zeria Chakale joined MCP on the same day.

Chikumbutso Sinsamala and Maureen Isa also from DPP joined MCP.

MCP Secretary General Eisenhower Mkaka received and unveiled the duo during a press briefing held at the party’s headquarters in the capital Lilongwe.

In his speech, Professor Chisi, whose party has been part of the governing Tonse Alliance, said he decided to join MCP because of what he called its vision and that of President Lazarus Chakwera.

“We are seeing development right now in the country in which others failed. These are visionary people with visionary leadership,” said Chisi.

Chakale said she was swayed by the infrastructural developments initiated by the Tonse government led by President Chakwera and the MCP.

Chakale said: “I am thankful for being welcomed, and I am here to stay. I started with DPP during Bingu’s time. The party was just using me as it fought its enemies.”

Before the press conference, there were reports that some DPP Members of Parliament were joining MCP including Mwanza Central lawmaker Nicolus Dausi who was suspended from the party, Zelia Chakale (DPP Director of women), Vuwa Kaunda (Nkhatabay Central lawmaker), Welani Chilenga (Chitipa South) Kamulepo Kaluwa (Rumphi East), Noel Lipipa (Blantyre City South), Owen Chomanika (Chikwawa North).

However, this publication understands that some lawmakers are afraid of Section 65 of the Malawi Constitution crossing the floor in Parliament.

MCP is strengthening its political muscle ahead of the 2024 Presidential polls.
