Police at Makokola in Mangochi District have arrested an 18-year-old woman, Aisha Rajab, from Namweta Village, Traditional Authority Mchiramwera in Thyolo District for stealing an 11-month-old baby boy of Shakira Ajidu, 32, after she pretended to babysit the little one.

The incident occurred on October 25, 2023 at Makawa Village in Traditional Autholity Mponda in the district.

It is alleged that Rajab on the said date visited the complainant’s house where she found the owner busy getting prepared in order to take the little one to the hospital. At that moment the victim was playing behind the house with his two brothers.

Taking advantage of the situation, the suspect asked to babysit the toddler and later vanished with the baby.

Few minutes later, the mother was surprised not to find her children outside the house prompting her to check at a nearby Video Show where they usually play and she only found the two siblings.

Upon being quizzed, they narrated that they left the victim in the hands of the suspect.

The incident was reported immediately at Makokola Police Unit who initiated investigations. The suspect was later arrested on the evening the same day with the help of members of the community while she was on her way to Katema with the child however her motive for stealing the child is not yet known.

Meanwhile, the baby has been positively identified by the owner while Rajab has been charged with child stealing contrary to Section 167 of the Penal Code and will appear before court after the completion of paperwork.
