The Parliamentary Committee on Defence and Security has recommended the new refugee camp site located at Kayilizi in the area of Senior Chief Mwenewenya in Chitipa district.

The development has come as the committee led by its Chairperson Ralph Jooma visited the proposed site on Sunday.

Jooma has described the site as ideal for a refugee camp considering that it is conducive and close to the border unlike Dzaleka refugee camp in Dowa district which is close to the capital city of Lilongwe, thereby raising security concerns.

Additionally, Jooma has thanked chiefs and people of Kayilizi community for the gesture, citing that the coming of the refugee camp will help to fast track socio-economic activities in the area.

“I have to thank chief Mwenewenya and his people for accepting the government call to have a refugee camp here, this is very commendable and we expect that people around the camp will benefit by among others through the provision of infrastructural development, education, health services and trade,” Stated Jooma.

Meanwhile, Group Village Headman Kayilizi has dismissed rumours of resistance by his subjects to welcome the development.

“My people have welcomed the project wholeheartedly. Actually this is a very rural area, it would have taken ages for us to reach urbanization. But with the coming of the camp, we stand to benefit in all sectors,” the chief said.

Ideally, a refugee camp is supposed to be located 50Km from the border and far away from the city.

The development also comes as the government is considering closing Dzaleka Refugee Camp in Dowa.
