Chakwera mourns Gondwe; says he was a patriot

Lilongwe, August 11: President Dr Lazarus Chakwera on Thursday joined Malawians in mourning the late Goodall Gondwe at his residence in area 10, Lilongwe.

Late Gondwe was one Malawi’s finest and renowned Economist who worked with many international organisation before joining politics and serving in different ministerial portfolios.

Speaking on behalf of President Chakwera, Speaker of the National Assembly Catherine Gotani Hara, said the president is deeply saddened by Gondwe’s demise, who he said has been a great advisor and a patriotic citizen.

Gotani said, “the late Gondwe, was good person, he used to give President Chakwera counsel despite their political difference; even when he was a member of parliament Gondwe was a father figure to many including members of parliament and cabinet ministers.”

Gotani further said Malawi has lost a great son, who loved his country and gave his life and the experience he gained from working with international organisations in contributing to country’s development.

Chairperson of the funeral organising committee Jappie Mhango, said late Gondwe died of backache problems.

Mhango also took time to express gratitude and thanking president Chakwera for making time to comfort Gondwe’s bereaved family.

The late Gondwe joined mainstream politics in 2004 when he was appointed as the Minister of Finance under the Bingu Wa Muntharika regime. Late Gondwe also served as a member of parliament for Mzimba North and also in various ministerial positions like Ministry of Local Government and Ministry of Natural Resources.

Survived by a wife and two sons, late Gondwe was born on 1st December 1936, he has died at the age of 87.
