Fugitive husband nabbed for killing wife and kid, Police recover body of the missing child

A fugitive husband, identified as Gift Howa, 31, has been apprehended after weeks in hiding for allegedly murdering his 25-year-old wife, Mary Baleti.

Her body was found buried in their matrimonial house in Ching’anda Village, Traditional Authority Lulanga. Police have also recovered the body of the couple’s one-month-old child, buried near Muwanga tree, just 40 meters away from the suspect’s house.

The incident came to light after a funeral ceremony took place in Mpamila village on July 6, 2023, where Mary Baleti (deceased) was notably absent. Concerned villagers questioned Howa about his wife’s whereabouts, and he falsely claimed that he had sent her to her home village in Nsanje district.

The villagers became suspicious, especially considering her usual activeness, and requested that he call his wife to confirm her location. However, Howa pleaded to be allowed to return home first to pack his carpentry tools, citing fears of theft, but instead, he fled the village.

A few days later, the villagers discovered Howa’s sudden departure and reported the matter to Lulanga Police Unit. The police went to the suspect’s house, found it locked, and forcibly entered. Bloodstains were discovered, leading them to uncover Mary Baleti’s buried body in one of the rooms, which had suffered severe cut wounds.

After initiating investigations, the police successfully arrested the suspect in Blantyre, where he was hiding. He cooperated with the police and led them to the field where the child’s body was recovered in a decomposed state.

Howa is expected to face charges of murder (2) under section 209 of the Penal Code and will appear before court for trial.

He hails from Mpamila Village, Traditional Authority Lulanga, in Mangochi district.
