The Malawi Netball National Team, the Queens on Monday, July 24, 2023, defeated Fiji 60-49 in a testing match in Cape Town, South Africa ahead of the 2023 Vitality Netball World Cup throw-off slated for July 28.

The first quarter ended Malawi 21-9, second quarter Queens led 36-25.

In the third quarter, Queens were leading by 50-36, and at full-time it was 60-49.

The duel also met in April this year during the Australia and Oceania Pacific Series where the Queens defeated Fiji 54-47 in a tight contested match.

On Tuesday 25th July 2023, Samuel Kanyenda’s girls will have a real check as they play New Zealand in another testing match.

New Zealand and Malawi last played against in the 2019 World Cup where Malawi lost 64-45.

Samuel Kanyenda the Queens caretaker said the two testing matches will help to rectify the weaknesses in the team ahead of the globe showpiece.

“We have played Fiji it was a good game but looking forward to Tuesday’s game against New Zealand as it will give us the real test. We didn’t play any friendly back home hence this gives us an opportunity to fine-tune the squad”, said Kanyenda.

Malawi’s Queens” are in Pool B alongside England, Barbados, and Scotland start the campaign with Scotland on 28th July 2023.

This will be the first Netball World Cup to be hosted on African soil, Malawi, South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Uganda are the only four teams representing Africa.
